The average diet is low in Omega 3 Essential Fatty Acids (EFAs), especially EPA & DHA, which is a result of a decrease in consumption of dietary sources of these beneficial EFAs, such as oily fish. Coupled with an increase in Omega 6 EFAs, it is evident the ratio of Omega 3 Omega 6 is now around 20-30:1, instead of the traditional range of 1-2:11.
EFAs make up the membrane that surrounds every cell in the body, and are found in large amounts in the brain, nerve endings, adrenal glands, eyes and reproductive organs. They are needed for many different functions including maintaining healthy brain function and congnition, good vision, healthy skin, normal joint function, heart health and immunity.
Lord Robert Winston and other leading health authorities, have presented research that confirms the benefits of Omega 3 Fatty Acids found in marine fish oils. In his award winning series ‘The Human Body’, Lord Winston explained the health benefits of EPA & DHA and their importance for children and adults in maintaining brain development, memory, cognitive function and cardiovascular health.
Omega 3 marine fish oils supply a unique source of 2 polyunsaturated Omega 3 EFAs called EPA (Eicosapentaenoic Adis) & DHA (Docosahexaenoic Acid), which are not found in plant oils.
DHA, a special long chain polyunsaturated fatty acid (LCPUFA), belongs to the Omega 3 group of EFAs, and is a vital component of cell membranes, especially those found in the brain and the retina of the eye. It is essential for healthy visual acuity, brain development and cognition.
DHA is also found in high levels in the brain’s grey matter where it is instrumental in the function of brain cell membranes, which are important for the transmission of brain signals. By making cell membranes more fluid, Omega 3 fatty acids improve communication between brain cells.
DHA is vital throughout early infancy and childhood for brain growth and development, where it supports learning and enhanced intelligence. Nutritional research indicates that infants and children with increased DHA intakes have higher IQ scores, improved cognitive function, learning abilities & behavioural skills.
Unfortunately, Omega 3 DHA deficiency is common in children who do not eat the recommended serving of oily fish each day.
Childhood is a time of rapid growth and children need optimal quantities of essential vitamins and mierals for healthy mental and physical development. If specific nutrients are lacking, children may be at risk of nutritional deficiencies and may suffer from low immune function.
With busy schedules, high refined, nutrient-poor foods, poor eating habits and picky or fussy eaters, many parents choose a children’s multivitamin to help their growing child’s daily nutrtional requirements.
B-Complex vitamins are needed for normal growth and development. Together they support carbohydrate metabolism, digestive health, brain, nervous system and muscle function. They are also needed for the formation of red blood cells and support heart health.
Vitamin C is a powerful antioxidant nutrient that helps to protect the body’s immune system againts infection. It is also important for maintaining healthy skin, teeth and bones and can help speed healing of bumps and bruises.
Like Vitamin C, Vitamin E is also a powerful antioxidant. It supports circulation, immune function and health heart and lungs.
Vitamin D is also important for keeping nasty bugs at bay, where it plays an important role in immune function. Children need adequate Vitamin D levels to build strong, healthy bones.
Biotin is essential for children’s skin health, hair, nervous system and bone marrow function.
Zinc is essential for proper development, throughout childhood. It helps to maintain a strong immune system, assist production of brain chemicals, speed wound healing, maintain taste and appetite and support growth and development. Preschoolers and toddlers are sometimes at risk for marginal zinc deficiencies because the best sources are meats and seafoods, foods they may not eat regularly.
Adequate Iron intake are essential for children to transport oxygen around the body. As a young child grows, blood volume increases, and so does the need for iron. It is also important for maintaining a strong immune system.
Ensuring that children eat the recommended number of servings from each of the food groups in the pyramid is the best way to be certain that all nutrional requirements are met.
